Community group wellbeing workshop

Are you part of a community group making change? Are you feeling the stress and strain of there never being enough time for everything to be done, and the emotional weight of the work that you’re doing?

We're a cooperative of experienced fitness and wellbeing trainers offering strategy, skills, fitness and collective care for activists, organisers, carers and workers.

We can offer:

  • A lunchtime or half-day workshop (in-person or online) helping you to reflect upon and understand your current wellbeing practices, and identify strategies for improvement

  • A physical practice, including beginner friendly stretches and exercises, designed for de-stressing (this can be included in the workshop or a separate session)

Union wellbeing workshop

Organising is all about cultivating relationships, yet those of us working in unions often neglect arguably our most critical relationship - with our own body. Our efforts have an undeniable mental and emotional emphasis, but our body is the vehicle through which we perform every action in our lives - it can be our closest ally on the long, uphill journey of building justice.

In our union wellbeing session we cover:

  • Developing awareness of your personal capacities, to be able to continue activism sustainability

  • Building a stronger sense of of balance and connection with yourself and others, by using unique wellbeing tools designed by and for organisers and activists

  • An inclusive and collective approach to fitness and health, beyond the industry stereotypes

We can deliver online or at your venue/event, over a lunchtime or half a day.

Quotes from some of our past trainees:

‘I’ve been doing this course while we were on strike - it's really been invaluable to me. It’s shaped how I’ve looked at the campaign, and it’s helped me look after myself a lot better going through the campaign.’

‘New strategies to cope with fatigue, exhaustion and the emotional/mental strain of organising. Really great mix of activities and information.’

Somatic practice sessions for social change groups

Somatics is a method for personal and collective change that explores how human beings are shaped by our experiences and by wider social forces. Somatics considers that the mind and body are both parts of what we humans experience as “self”, and invites us to pay attention to sensation, emotion, thinking and external context as parts of our whole human shape. We each “embody” ways of being, relating and surviving that develop through our lived experience. The cultures we live in, trauma and oppression all shape us in ways that can make it difficult to live according to what matters most to us, or that cut us off from being able to know what we long for. Through gentle movement practices, role play and bodywork, somatic practices help us explore our shaping, cultivate resilience, respond generatively to conflict, and embody new skills and competencies that are relevant to us in our work for social and personal change. Somatic principles can also be used with groups, to explore how groups and movements are shaped and how groups can move towards ways of acting and relating that are better matched to their collective purpose and values.

As an example, we offer an introductory practice session at the Worker Coop Weekend organised by workers.coop, focusing on practices relevant to working co-operatively. In these workshops people practice responding to requests from colleagues and exploring what it feels like on a somatic level to say yes, no or maybe. By exploring scenarios in a low-stakes workshop environment, people gain more agency about how to respond in high-pressure situations like a workplace or while taking political action.

If this sounds interesting, get in touch. We can offer either an introductory session to somatic practices or a series of six sessions tailored to your organisation.

We Got To Move can offer beginner-friendly group exercise classes to your organisation, delivered by fully qualified personal trainers with experience in working with a variety of client groups. Our approach is inclusive and adaptable, catering to the needs of both individuals and the group in front of us. We have particular expertise in working with the LGBT community, having partnered with organisations such as Not A Phase, a charity working with transgender adults across the UK.

We can offer simple exercises and routines which can be altered for all fitness levels and ability and a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

You can book us to deliver a one off session or a series of sessions to your group, organisation or clients. Our typical charges include wages per hour, transport costs and core costs for our organisation. Please contact us to discuss this further and with any questions or requests.
